School Journey 2015 – Day 3

Day 3 was another activity filled day. We woke up to the dreaded rain but everyone put a brave face on (the boiled eggs and cereal helped!) and wrapped up in the centre’s orange waterproofs and headed out.

2 groups spent the morning honing their map reading skills orienteering round the site. Despite the heavy rain the children did well to complete two courses before retreating to the common room for some hot Apple and Blackcurrant and showers to warm them up.

While this was happening the other two groups tackled the Tyre Course and Low Ropes. Some great teamwork was shown during the tyre course managing to carry their planks around the obstacles and not falling in the ‘hot lava!’ Special mentions must go to Robert who gave everything a go with a great attitude and really helped his team get round. The Low Ropes was a real challenge today due to the slippy conditions and the cold but as expected the children rose to the challenge. Robert again was superb! Special mentions also must go to George who showed a real talent for balance.

After everyone had changed and had time to warm up it was time to go back out into the elements! 2 groups went off to the ‘Survival Challenge’ where they had to build shelters and baked bread on an open fire (which was very, very tasty!). All 3 shelters they built were very impressive and would have happily slept the teams and kept them dry. Special mention to Raia, Suraya, Emily, Jamaal and Jennifer who came up with a great design and built a great shelter (even adding an extension so they could all fit!).

While those groups were getting their hands dirty the other two groups were harnessed up and tackling the Climbing Wall and Thunderstruck. Zione must get a special mention for his speed up the climbing wall, narrowly missing out on pipping Henry to the top (we’re sure Henry greased the first hand hold to make him slip and slow him down!).

Due to the adverse weather we postponed the night walk until tomorrow and are combining it with our Campfire when we hope it’s a bit drier.
