Word wizards of Cuba

This week the children have continued narrative writing based on a Philip Pullman classic, ‘Clockwork – Or Wound Up.

Check out these brilliant pieces of ‘Golden Writing’ from Isla, Hayley and Tanima!

Isla:

Preface

Most fairy tales begin with ‘once upon a time’, this one doesn’t. This tale happened many, many years ago way before you were born. When we had real clockwork, I mean springs and cogwheels and pendulums and so on. When you took it apart, you could see how it worked and how to put it together again. Each part of the story is like clockwork, all fitting together to make it move. So lets wind it up and begin…

Opening

Amongst the huge pile of snow, there was a trail of footsteps leading to the local tavern: The White Horse. Those footsteps belonged to the gloomy apprentice clock-maker, Karl. He was trudging alongside the half-hearted town clockmaker, Herr Ringelman. His baggy trousers hung down to the plain white pavement like restless teenagers slumping down the street discontentedly. The smell of beer and sauerkraut hung like strong poisonous gases even outside. The faded windows that were in the door pleased Karl, because it meant that the folk inside of the tavern didn’t know he was about to walk inside. As he stepped inside he caught the beginning of Fritz, the local storyteller’s, tale:

Fritz’s Story

“Do you recall the mind-blowing event that happened at the palace in that mysterious town just a few miles away? The secretive townsfolk tried to keep it under lock but all secrets are found out even if 3 grandparents later. Get ready to experience the unknown palace tale of the much-loved Price Otto.

It was a beautiful morning, the birds were singing in harmony as the sun rose above the palace, so the Prince took this as the perfect opportunity to take his young son, Florian, hunting with a family friend Baron Stelgratz. They were expected back in a week or so. But surprisingly they came back two nights later.”

Hayley:

Preface

Most fairy tales start with once upon a time but we have no time. So let’s begin!

Fritz’s Story

“Do you think anyone remembers the dark events that were whispered in your ear? They sent a cold chill down your spine and those events have scarred you for the rest of your life. It was a secret that they managed to hush up but beware, this secret is about to break free…”

Tanima:

Fritz’s Story

“I wonder if anyone remembers the morbid event that took place at the palace. In that town – not too different to our town…On that very day – not too different to this one. The locals tried to lock it up, but it escaped. Get ready to hear all about this gruesome town handling a self-eating secret.”

I can’t wait to hear what the dark secret that needs to be revealed is!
