School Journey – Day 4

Today was another action packed day at Margaret McMillan House. We started the day with a fantastic hike through Trosley Park and the North Downs in the sunshine! Everyone listened attentively to Kevin as he explained about the Prehistoric Megaliths to be found in the park and about the different types of stone found there.

The children also found a ‘geocache’ hidden in a stone under one of the trees as well as learning about different trees and plants from the area.

Part of the walk took us past the church of St Peter and St Paul. Kevin pointed out the flint bricks used to build it and we saw the fossils of ammonites and other prehistoric creatures embedded in the stone. We then had a look inside and learned about the village that used to surround it that was abandoned during the plague.

The way back involved a run up a huge hill to an incredible viewpoint that looked out over the Kent countryside. Everyone was out of breath at the top but felt great they’d made it and not one person moaned it was too much! We were very proud of them all.

In the afternoon we split into 2 groups and took turns at the ‘blind line’ and Archery.

The ‘blind line’ involved one child wearing a blindfold while another guided them through an obstacle course in the woods just using their voice. It was a lot of fun and really helped the children to see the value of good communication.

The archery had some stand out performers, children who discovered a natural ability they didn’t know they had, Idris, Chloe, Akram, Syra, Jada, Jasin and Liam in particular. However, when it comes to shooting under pressure special mention must go to Albertine and Layla. With their team needing two golds (the hardest shot to make) with just two arrows left each stepped up and nailed the bullseye! We also discovered we had a descendent of Robin Hood with us when Ella, or Mrs Hood as she is now known, scored 44 with just 3 arrows.

Later on it’s the Barn Dance and there are lots of people looking forward to boogying away on the dance floor!
