Literacy

This week, we’ve started a new unit  called ‘Film Narrative’. We’ve been watching a short film called ‘The Piano‘ which we’ll be using in the next few weeks to help us write our own story. So far, we’ve been looking at the themes (love and loss, family and nostalgia) and emotions (using vocabulary like ‘sorrowful’, ‘nostalgic’ and ‘melancholy’). Additionally, we’ve looked at the thoughts and the feelings of the characters during the battle scene, ready to empathise with him to write a letter this week.

As a bit of extra home learning, you could watch other films and think about what the themes are. Remember, it’s not what happens in the story but what the underlying message or idea is. E.g. Cinderalla’s theme is good things happen to good people.

Maths

In maths, we’ve continued looking at decimals. We’ve been using a bead string to see how a tenth and hundredth compares to a whole and placing decimals and fractions in order. You may like to visit this website and ask them to show you 2 tenths, 33 hundredths, etc.

If you want to challenge, how could you use the string to add and subtract tenths and hundredths?

Topic

We did a lot of science this week, looking specifically at colour and light. Now we know the definitions of opaque, transparent and translucent, we know how shadows are formed and we even know how to make white light.

Perhaps, you could repeat the investigation at home and see if you could make white using the seven colours of the rainbow. Here’s template you could use.

Homework

As a lot of people coulnd’t find the homework last week here it is again. There are four pieces of homework:

1. Mathletics – the new tasks have been set and hopefully they’ll be ready and working. It’s all to do with decimals. Remember to use a place value chart to help.

2. Bug  Club

3. Research an artist (any artist that you particularly like!) and create a fact file. The more creatively made the better! Include famous pieces of art they created, when they were born, died, etc. The more detail the better.

Your own interpretation of a picture would be great too! Can y0u paint Starry Night, for example?

4. As photos are going to be a big part of the new topic, we’d love it if you took a photo of something special and that you’re proud of. We’d love to show them off in the classroom. As it’s easiest to take pictures on phones and tablets, you may want to email them to ict@brecknock.camden.sch.uk
