Science Trip to London Zoo – 9.7.14

Today 27 children from Year 2, 3, 4 and 5 were taken on an extra special day out to London Zoo. This was no ordinary trip! We were invited by the ZSL as special guests to help them trial their new education workshops.

The children took part in a workshop about endangered animals, and even had the chance to touch a Madagascan Cockroach and an American Corn Snake! We were very impressed by the children’s exisiting knowledge of endangered species.

We then had the whole day to spend at the zoo, so we decided to check out the new ‘Tiger Territory’, where we met Jay Jay the adult male tiger, and observed the new tiger cubs on webcam.

After our lunch, we headed to Butterfly Paradise before settling down to meet the penguins at ‘Penguin Beach’. Unfortunately, Ricky the rock-hopper penguin didn’t come out today, he was feeling a bit shy!

Then we headed ‘Into Africa’ and checked out the Giraffes, Zebras, Okapis, African hunting dogs and pygmy hippos. After all that hard work we stopped for a refreshment break (ice-lollies!), and to end our day we had a wander around the ‘Reptile’ enclosure.

All in all we had a fantastic day, it was a real treat and the children, who have all shown a particular talent or interest in science this year, thoroughly deserved it.

On Monday the children will be holding a live skype session with London Zoo staff to feedback about their experience and share their research into an endangered animal of their choice, whihc they will be completing in their own time over the next few days.

Well done everyone!
