It’s only cabbage science!

What subjects do YOU learn every year? English, Maths, PE, IPC and of course Science, (one of my personal favorites).

During this tiring yet tremendous week, year 5 have been working up to a wonderful science competition against year 5 pupils from all over Camden. From the title, you probably will have guessed that the experiment we have been working on has something to do with red cabbage and you are bang on target. We were given some red cabbage, which we had to shred and tip into a colander, while waiting for the water to boil. Being careful not spill,we poured the boiling water through the colander into a bowl and watched it magically turn purple. After that, we poured a few different liquids into a cup and finally added a few ml of cabbage juice into each glass, observing the magical colour change. The experiment uncovered that cabbage is an indicator of acid and alkaline, two opposites a bit like hot and cold. There are many indicators, cherries and pear skin are just a few of the different indicators and come into Cuba class to find out more…

Every child is extremely excited about this amazing opportunity and can’t wait for Thursday, the day of the event, to come around, after doing the experiment the week before. In our science lab  classroom, we have been trying all kinds of different methods, to help us rise to the top but sadly only a few can present our thrilling presentation to the judges on the day. The few lucky scientists representing Brecknock, will explain what we have learnt and hopefully come on top!

“After watching my partner’s liquid turn hot magenta, I couldn’t wait to reveal my liquid’s secret identity! Quickly pouring the cabbage juice into the cup, I observed my substance turning blood red and curiosity overcame me, I wanted to know why . Why did the liquid change colour? Why did it happen so quickly? I soon discovered the answer was: SCIENCE!!!”

Brecknock came second place, Well done junior scientist!
